Situation Recent changes to the HP LaserJet 4050 and HP LaserJet 5000 printers

Situation

Recent changes to the HP LaserJet 4050 and HP LaserJet 5000 printers?Control Panel circuitry has resulted in some unexpected changes to the messages displayed during some of the printer抯 special power-on modes. The most obvious change is that some initial power-on messages (immediately after entering these special power-on modes) are not always displayed. A less obvious effect is that after power-on in any special mode (including Service Mode which is not otherwise affected by this change), subsequent messages may not display properly until the printer is powered off and then back on again. No other adverse affects have resulted from this Control Panel circuitry change.

Only a limited number of HP LaserJet 4050 and 5000 printers are affected by this Control Panel change. The issues resulting from this change will be corrected at the earliest opportunity. Control Panels available as service parts are not affected by this change.

Solution

Following are the affected power-on modes and how to ensure that these special modes have been activated using the modified Control Panels:

Printer Mode	Typical Power-On Procedure	Modified Control Panel Procedure	Modified Control Panel Indication
Select Language	Hold down the [Select] key and power on the printer. Hold the key down until SELECT LANGUAGE appears in the display.	Hold down the [Select] key and power on the printer. Hold the key down until you hear the motors rotate.	Following printer initialization, the LANGUAGE= menu will appear in the display.
Cold Reset	Hold down the [Go] key and power on the printer. Hold the key down until COLD RESET appears in the display.	Hold down the [Go] key and power on the printer. Hold the key down until you hear the motors rotate.	Following printer initialization, RESTORING FACTORY SETTINGS will appear in the display.
Cleanup NVRAM	Hold down the [Cancel Job] key and power on the printer. Hold the key down until CLEANUP NVRAM appears in the display.	Hold down the [Cancel Job] key and power on the printer. Hold the key down until you hear the motors rotate.	No visible indication, though any resolvable 68 NVRAM errors should be resolved.
Reset Maintenance Counter *	Hold down the [-Item] and [-Value] keys while powering on the printer. Hold the keys down until RESET MAINT COUNT appears in the display.	Hold down both the [-Item] and [-Value] keys and power on the printer. Hold the keys down until COUNT appears in the second line of the display.	COUNT should appear in the second line of the display on power-up.
* CAUTION:	Resetting the maintenance counter without replacement of a Maintenance Kit may void any warranty or service contract coverage.

CRITICAL	Any time you enter *any* special power-on modes (such as Service Mode) with the modified Control Panel, be sure to cycle power on the printer to avoid any problems with subsequent display messages.
